Pensacola: the USS Oriskany and historic wrecks
Pensacola’s headline site is the USS Oriskany, a 911-foot aircraft carrier sunk in May 2006 about 22.5 nautical miles southeast of Pensacola Pass. It’s the largest artificial reef ever intentionally sunk in U.S. waters. The top of the island sits around 80 ft, the flight deck around 145 ft, and the hull rests at about 212 ft — so most of the ship is advanced, deep or technical territory. Closer in, the USS Massachusetts — a battleship commissioned in 1896 — rests in shallow water near shore and is one of the most accessible historic wrecks on the Gulf. Big pelagics like whale sharks and mantas are occasionally reported around the Oriskany, but never guaranteed.
Panama City Beach: the widest wreck lineup
Panama City Beach bills itself as the “Wreck Diving Capital of the South,” and the variety backs it up. The newest addition is the Black Pearl, a 97-foot steel replica pirate ship built for Pirates of the Caribbean and sunk in November 2025 about six nautical miles southwest of St. Andrews Pass. It sits in about 75 ft of water with its top near 54 ft, so it’s open to Open Water divers.

Also on the local list: the USS Chippewa and the Spanish Shanty. Expect amberjack and snapper on every wreck, goliath grouper on the bigger ones, and bottlenose dolphins on many boat rides out. Visibility typically runs 30–50 ft in season.
Destin & South Walton: easy ledges and an underwater museum
Destin sits over natural limestone ledges close to shore, which makes it an easy first Gulf trip. Wreck divers head to the Miss Louise tugboat (~60 ft, novice-friendly) and the Thomas Hayward Liberty ship (90+ ft, Advanced). Just east in South Walton, the Underwater Museum of Art is a permanent sculpture garden about 0.9 miles off Grayton Beach State Park in roughly 58 ft of water — the first of its kind in the U.S.
